23rd July 2012

As Kingswood pupils started their fixtures against Winterberg and Framesby on Saturday morning, news of the tragic  accident between a bus from Cradock Primary School and a minibus taxi on the R61 outside Graaff Reinet reached Grahamstown.  Kingswood staff, parents and pupils stopped for a minute of silent prayer at 12 noon to honour those who lost their lives in the horrific crash.  Seventeen people died in the accident, including the Headmaster of Cradock Primary School, Mr Wimpie van der Merwe and a 10-year pupil from the school.  It is reported that the taxi overtook another vehicle on a blind rise and smashed head-on into the 60-seater bus.  Mr van der Merwe was driving the bus.  Kingswood College Head Mr Jon Trafford said, "We all travel to sports fixtures all the time, and an accident like this affects us deeply.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the staff, parents and pupils of Cradock Primary school and all the families of those injured and those who have died in this tragic accident."
