The Kingswood Junior School Moonlit Market was a great success despite the freezing weather that arrived on Friday morning! Parents and Grahamstown residents turned out in numbers to support the event, all wrapped up in coats and scarves - and enjoyed the warm atmosphere of the Market. The Food Tent - where you could buy a variety of dishes ranging from curry and rice, macaroni, burgers, soup, pancakes or delicious coffee and cake at Tessa Loock's famous coffee shop - did a roaring trade, as did the Grade 7 Market Tent where pupils sold their wares as part of their Market Day project. In the hall, the usual array of games were available to keep the children entertained, and the Beer Tent was full of fun with a range of stalls including an art exhibition, jewellery stall and a cheese stall. Several attractive 'lots' were auctioned to raise funds for the school. The recently-formed Kingswood Jazz Band kept the crowds tapping their toes with a programme of popular jazz pieces. It was a real family affair, with young children dancing to the music and enjoying the safe enviroment of the Junior School grounds.
The Moonlit Market started as a fundraising project of the Kingswood Junior Parents Association ten years ago, and was based on a similar concept from the Waldorf School in Cape Town. The idea is that the evening is held when there is a new moon, but the clouds shielded the moon from view on Friday. However, this did not deter the visitors from enjoying the event. The cold weather seemed to add to the atmosphere with the sale of warming curry and rice and soup going briskly!
