Kingswood College 1st XV vs Winterberg – 24 July 2010
Kingswood College continued their excellent season with a resounding 42-12 win over a determined and tenacious Winterberg Agricultural High School team in Grahamstown on Saturday after leading 11-3 at half time.
The match failed to gain any real momentum as both teams struggled to come to terms with the referee’s interpretations of the set scrum and the breakdown point. Despite this, the home side was dominant in all facets of the game but solid defense from the visitors and some indifferent finishing kept some respectability to the score line.
The Kingswood strong running backs found plenty of space late in the second half and threw the ball about with gay abandon splitting the Winterberg defense with some scintillating running.
Winterberg flyhalf, H Curten scored all his team’s points via four penalty goals and enjoyed a good all-round performance with some clever, tactical kicking.
Stars for Kingswood were fullback Scott van Breda who contributed 17 points via one try, two penalties and three conversions; Chris Roberts who was simply outstanding in all facets of play and No 8 Chad Matthews who was solid in defense and put in some storming runs. Other try scorers for Kingswood were Roberts (2), Matthews, flyhalf Steven Hansel after a decisive break, and left wing David Kombe.
